ChatGPT prompts for insurance agents: copy, paste, edit

This is the starting point for agents who want better results from ChatGPT and other AI assistants. Learn a simple prompt formula, practice it with the prompt below, then jump to ready-made prompts for the jobs agents do every day.

Below is a ready-to-copy prompt to learn to write better AI prompts, a detailed version that asks you clarifying questions first, and tips for using it. It works in any AI assistant: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.

The prompt

Teach me a simple prompt formula for work (role, task, context, format, constraints) with 3 insurance-agency examples, then critique a prompt I write.

Detailed version (asks clarifying questions first)

Act as an experienced assistant to a licensed insurance agent. Before answering, ask me up to 3 clarifying questions (your role, the AI tool you use and what you want to achieve). Then complete this task, and finish with a short checklist of statements I should verify with my compliance team.

Task: Teach me a simple prompt formula for work (role, task, context, format, constraints) with 3 insurance-agency examples, then critique a prompt I write.

What a good result looks like

A good prompt reads like a clear request to a capable new assistant: who it should act as, what you need, the context it can't guess, the format you want back, and the limits it must respect. When you run the prompt on this page, a good answer explains that formula in plain language, shows three agency examples (for instance a renewal email, a call summary and a social post) and then critiques your own prompt line by line.

Common mistakes and watch-outs

A common mistake is asking for too much in one vague line ('write something about renewals'), then blaming the tool. The second is pasting real client details to give 'context'. Use placeholders such as [First Name] or [Renewal Date] instead. Also watch for confident but wrong statements about coverage or regulations; AI output is a first draft, not an authority.

How to adapt the prompt

Swap the three examples for the jobs you do most: a Medicare agent might ask for an educational AEP reminder, a commercial producer for a submission cover note. Add your constraints once (tone, word limit, 'no guarantees, no price claims') and save the finished prompt so your team reuses the same standard.

EXAMPLE output (placeholder data, not a real client)
Prompt formula: Role + Task + Context + Format + Constraints

Example (renewal reminder):
Role: You are an assistant to a licensed P&C agent.
Task: Write a renewal reminder email.
Context: Client [First Name], auto policy renews on [Renewal Date]; recently added a teen driver.
Format: Under 120 words, friendly, with a subject line.
Constraints: No rate promises; invite a 15-minute review; placeholders only.

Critique of your prompt: 'Write a renewal email' is missing context (which policy, what changed) and constraints (length, tone, compliance limits).

How to use it

  1. Copy the prompt. Copy the short prompt above, or the detailed version if you want the AI to ask clarifying questions first.
  2. Add your details. Add the details for your situation (line of business, audience, tone). Keep it de-identified; never paste client personal information.
  3. Run it in the right tool. Paste it into any AI assistant: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.
  4. Review before you use it. Check every fact, name and number yourself.
  5. Take the next step. Next, see: Set up a custom assistant with agency instructions.
